Plot is situated between Piraeus Avenue, railway, a shopping mall and 1960s’ housing units. The main goal was the creation of a living neighborhood, with public and semi-public spaces easy to use and maintain, as well as recreating the sense of community between the dwellers. The organized housing projects so far did not have the acceptance of Greek citizens. For example the housing multi-storey blocks, that are situated next to our plot, and their open spaces are nowadays more or less abandoned. Keeping that in mind, our concern was to design affordable social housing units, that can be successful in social, economical and sustainability terms. Square block system was preferred in order to keep a low building height, which allows dwellers to have a better contact with ground level. The inner square’s space I used as a public atrium for events and recreation. The proposed park solves another problem of the area, the lack of green common spaces. In our solution a green park with high trees is designed in order to “protect” the housing area from city noises, and also provide an easy accessible, natural and cultural route. Τhe second smaller park is situated along the railroad tracks, and facilitates athletic activities.
Plot is situated in Corfu Jewish district close to town’s fortress. The central design idea is based on separating the functions of the building into two parallel volumes and the most particular use of the building (wind instruments room) in one overhead volume perpendicular to the two previous ones. Basic design principles were the continuation of the stoa on the main face of the building, the creation of a passage between the two parallel volumes, characterized by the visual escape towards the fortress and the connection of the Jewish district through this passage with the path leading to the fortress.
The 2 similar-in form- buildings that are being studied in this project are located in the area of the archeological site of the Spinalonga fortress, in the northwestern side of the island and within the Venetian wall. These are the dormitories of the leprous hospital built by its patients in the 1920s and are the only surviving buildings that were entirely and initially built during the period of the leprous hospital. The dormitories of the hospital are a typical example of the modern movement, probably the only examples surviving since the interwar period taking place in the wider region. Indeed, their use and function as a collective home is also loyal to the social approaches of modernism. In the framework of the diploma thesis, a thorough and detailed structural analysis of the dormitory, as well as the identification of the pathology of the construction took place, leading to the proposal for its new use as part of a cluster of activities in the area of the Spinalonga bay and its coastal areas (artistic station of the ASFA - outdoor activities).
Our proposal approaches the redesigning of the axis to one of a pedestrian street with limited –if not one at points- access to vehicles. These decisions were made with a goal to the protection of the existing monuments in the area, as well as to the transformation of the axis’s character to a multi-functioning one. This transformation was achieved not only by the wide variety of the land use on both of its sides but mainly by the use of the already existing public spaces as an area were multiple activities can be held.
The challenge was to refurbish a 30sqm studio to a multifunctional space. For that reason space saving flexible furniture was chosen, such as a wall bed and a mini-kitchenette. The coffee table and the wall desk were also custom designed and carton tubes were used for their construction.
The shop is located in the central commercial road of Agios Nikolaos. It was a former stationery shop. Pastel colors are used to create a relaxing environment. Logo design is based on the shape of an “αιώρα”, the greek word that stands for hammock.
The Room 18 Pan-European Design Competition had as its subject the designing of the interior of a typical bedroom in a Greek four-star urban hotel of a total area of 18 – 24m2, whose basic characteristics are determined by the specifications of GNTO (Greek National Tourism Organisation). We were called upon to present ways of creatively re-interpreting and transcending these specifications in a response to the likely wishes and expectations of the contemporary traveller.
Plot is overlooking the picturesque Voulismeni lake in Agios Nikolaos (East Crete). It is set over a 20-meter high cliff, having a panoramic view of the town. Its south-east boundary faces the steep public lakeside stairwell. Among this boundary there are two landings: first one on a +20.00 altitude and second on +22.70 altitudes. Set on a small Plot (120sqm) in the town center the two residencies keep a modest, space-saving design. Pilotis is used to protect their privacy as well as offering a better view of the lake.
